Basic skill and work preparation training for adults with disabilities

Our programs assists adults with developmental disabilities in gaining, maintaining and improving their skills related to activities of daily living, community participation and vocational preparation. We strive to develop a plan based upon the individual's needs and preferences so that they can be successful at home and in the community. Services Offered to Our Clients (Availability Varies Per Program): Developmental Services Graphic

Sensory Stimulation and Exploration:
Sensory stimulation encourages individuals to readily interact with their environment. We assist individuals in helping them explore their environments by offering various activities such as music therapy, aromatherapy, tactile stimulation, and medical desensitization.

 

 

 

 


Community Integrated Activities:
Learn appropriate social skills and safety awareness by participating in various planned community activities. Individuals are exposed to historical, educational, and recreational events and places in their community. Appreciation of community, enhanced social etiquette, and most importantly, the opportunity to make choices, is the focus of this service.


Adult Daily Living Skill:
Learn skills and procedures needed to complete age appropriate daily living skills such as care of personal items, social awareness, and general self care.

Arts and Crafts:
Individuals learn functional skills while incorporating problem solving and communication into each activity. Individuals are taught functional skills such as stamping, floral arrangement, wood working, drawing with various line tools, painting, hand rolling and shaping clay, stenciling, cutting, gluing, assembling, and glazing. Individuals also learn to communicate in their work through choice of subject matter, color, shape, pattern and texture.

Horticulture/Plant Care:
Learn skills needed to grow and care for various plants and foliage. Functional skills taught include potting, scooping soil, planting seeds, weeding, and pruning, watering, misting, and utilizing horticulture tools. Learn to identify various plants and needs of each plant as well as responsibility and care. Plant growth provides visual reinforcement for the individual's work.

 

 

 

 


Switch Use:
This interactive activity is offered to individuals that would benefit from enhancing their sensory awareness. Individuals are taught cause and effect as well as facility enhanced communication through use of switches attached to various stimuli such as audio, visual (such as activating lights,) and tactile. Various switches are available based on the individual's physical adaptability including press, pull, push, roll, and squeeze devices. Skills attained in this area can be transferred from the work to the home and work/training environment.


Vocational Work:
Learn skills needed to complete vocational jobs and piece work to prepare individuals for higher levels of vocational programming and ultimately employment.


Cooking:
Learn skills needed to cook and bake. Individuals get hands-on experience and training in preparing various foods and food products. The individuals enjoy the finished products or share them with others.


Computers:
Learn to utilize a computer and various computer programs. Develop skills through interactive computer teaching activities.


Health and Safety:
Learn identification of medical and safety terminology and symbols, medical desensitization, health and nutritional information. Individuals learn the importance of exercise and are taught safe and effective techniques to participate in various forms of exercise such as chair dancing, yoga, and calisthenics.


Sports and Games:
Teach skills in coordination, turn taking, social awareness, following game rules and team work. Individuals choose from a variety of sports and games and learn techniques to participate and have fun while learning.
